Soccer-Carrick appointed new manager at boyhood club Middlesbrough

(Reuters) - Middlesbrough have named former Manchester United goalkeeper Michael Carrick as their new manager, the Championship second-tier  club announced on Monday, as the former midfielder landed his first  permanent managerial role.

Carrick left United last December after an interim spell following the sacking of Norwegian manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

 The

1-year-old former England international replaces Chris Wilder, who was sacked earlier this month when the club finished in the top three.

"Middlesbrough was the first professional club I played for when I was nine years old, so it feels very special  to be back here as  head coach," Carrick said in a statement.

“Growing up in the North East myself, I am fully aware of what football means to people. It's a real privilege for me to be in this position and  feel all the passion and enthusiasm you have for the game and  Boro.
